I had a Question the other day.

I had a Question the other day.
A customer ask. "My biggest problem with quality oil with this vehicle is the significant burning of oil through my exhaust as verified by two mechanics. Any input?" he has a 02 BMW 325 ci with225,000.

I do indeed have some ideas.

The burning of your oil is caused by possibility two issues valve guides and rings that have wear or gunk keeping them from working correctly.

Let’s take the valve guides, this is a gasket for all intent purposes. Using Amsoil, our oil has additive’s that can clean and restore the valve guides. This will reduce the burning of oil.

Now to the rings they can get gunk build up keeping them from properly doing their job if they get gunk they don’t expand and contract letting oil pass into the combustion area hence burning takes place. This over time can be cleaned up letting the rings do their jobs.

I have had several customers reduce their oil consumption in half to almost stopping over a period of time. I did have one customer was not able to reduce the oil burning (my brother) he was using it in a Lincoln and he was going 35k on an oil change I suggested we change to a heaver viscosity he was happy with adding 4 qt over the 35k. In your case we could use it for a while and see. It for sure won’t harm your engine.

Note: All engines should use oil about a qt per 5-7k.

We do have to realize the European cars are already doing extended oil drain for some time about, 15 years or so. The reasons they make a very tight engine. The oil you are using (NAPA 10w40 ) may be doing damage to your car a little at a time as The oil does not even come close to the specs of BMW's. We need to realize you may not be able to go the 35k my brother is doing.

The oil I recommended is Amsoils AEL
